How do you become a Staff Sergeant?
A Staff Sergeant is most often promoted from Sergeant (SGT), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience.
In addition to a monthly basic pay salary, a Army Staff Sergeant may be eligible for multiple types of allowances and bonus pay including retirement benefits, education allowance, food allowance, hazard pay, and more.
Over time it, all servants of the law were identified by the noun ââ¬Åservientium.ââ¬Â The two phrases combined over time to refer to servants who were enforcers or protectors of law, these being members of the military, specifically the leaders of groups of soldiers.
With the mediaeval languages of langue dââ¬â¢oc and langue dââ¬â¢oil, used across territory that became modern day France, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, gave way to the modern day language of French, the word of sergant found widespread usage, referring to a military servant of a lord.
England adopted the meaning of the word and much of the same spelling during the time of Norman rule when the official language of England was French, using the word sarjeant to refer to men who traded military service for land ownership or the patronage of feudal lords.
With the advent of states, the rule of law, single recognized rulers, and standing militaries, England officially adopted ââ¬Åsarjeantââ¬Â as the military rank of sergeant, a soldier in charge of squad of soldiers.
With the formation of the United States following the Revolutionary War, the United States kept the rank of Sergeant in the same capacity.

History of the Army Sergeant Rank
A Sergeant is a Noncommissioned Officer in the United States Army at DoD paygrade E-5.
The history of the title of sergeant as a military rank derives, as with the rank of corporal, from Latin and use in the Roman Army. The rate at which these requirements are met, as well as the level of performance achieved by individual soldiers in completing them, corresponds to the rate at which points are accumulated.
Upon accumulating enough points and then receiving command recommendation, soldiers are promoted to Sergeant officially by an act of the Secretary of the Army.

Soldiers are promoted to the rank of Sergeant from either the rank of Specialist or Corporal, both ranks of the E-4 grade.
To be promoted to Sergeant, soldiers must serve thirty-six months of service and months of time in grade; although, commanders can waive the requirement for time in service in light of consistent good performance of soldiers while serving in lower ranks.
Additionally, soldiers seeking promotion to Sergeant must also complete the Basic Leader Course while holding the rank of Specialist.
Further, they must complete the Warrior Leader Course (WLC), formerly known as the Primary Leader Development Course (PLDC).
Further still, they must continue to meet the physical requirements for continued service.
The rank of Sergeant is the first in which soldiers compete against each other for the title by accumulating points.
